  • Organic Ice Cream. Green & Blacks chocolate has debuted a line of delicious organic ice cream. Mmmm.
  • Plant Love Lipstick. PlantLove Botanical Lipstick from Cargo is a new eco-friendly lipstick. The tube is made from corn plastic and the outer carton is made from flower paper embedded with flower seeds - simply moisten and plant!
  • A hero needs your help! Michael J. Keenan was burned over 80% of his body after he ran into a burning building to save a trapped Jack Russell Terrier named Bobby. Bobby was severely burned, but is recovering steadily. Michael, an artist, has no insurance and is currently being treated in the ICU of San Francisco General Hospital. Donate to the Michael J. Keenan support fund and help this hero in his recovery process.

  • Harry Potter goes green. The final installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows will not only be the biggest, but also the greenest. In addition to using paper containing a minimum of 30% post-consumer waste, a special deluxe edition will be printed on paper using 100% post-consumer waste.
  • Proud of our Hometown. According to a nationwide study conducted by Country Home Magazine, Chico, CA is one of the greenest cities in America! Chico was ranked the twentieth most eco-friendly place to live out of 379 cities. Yay Chico!
  • Go Green, Get Rich. Problem 5: Dirty water.

  • Are your fish dying from dye? Beth wanted to let everyone know about a disturbing practice going on in the freshwater tropical fish industry. She found that many of these fish have been either injected with a needle or dipped in a dye that is known to cause disease and lesions that will ultimately kill the fish. Read more about this problem at DeathbyDyeing.org.
  • Shrink wrapped trash? Josh sent along an article about TransLoad America, a solid waste management company that plans to shrink wrap tons of garbage in plastic. The company claims it a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to dispose of waste because the shrink wrapped cylindrical bales won't leach pollution into groundwater.
  • Vegetarian recommendation. Theresa in Santa Cruz wanted to let everyone know about her favorite brand of fake chicken and turkey, Quorn.
  • Shout out! Big thanks to Natalie and her blog, She who laughs, lasts, for the spreading the word about More Hip!
  • No Impact. Allison found an article about a family in NYC conducting what they call the No Impact experiment. Rules for No Impact include producing no trash (except compost), eating only organic food grown within a 250-mile radius of Manhattan, and using no paper (even toilet paper is off limits). Alison also found a cool water powered clock and a multifunction clock with thermometer and alarm.
  • A Hipster needs your help! Carrie is planning a walk from New York to Los Angeles in order to raise awareness of the small actions we can all take to make the environment healthier. She needs lots of supplies and support, so check out her website and help this dedicated hipster raise awareness!

  • Manure recycled into furniture? Researchers at Michigan State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are saying that fiber processed from sterilized cow manure could be taking the place of sawdust in fiberboard, used to make flooring, furniture, and even store shelves. Researchers hope it could partly solve the problem of disposing the 1.5 trillion to 2 trillion pounds of manure produced annually in the United States.
  • Norwegian's 'Think' big. The Norwegian electric car company Think Nordic ASA has raised $25 million in capital and plans to begin making its new design Think City car later this year. The Think City has a range of around 110 miles and meets both European and U.S. safety standards.

  • Go Green, Get Rich. Problem # 4: Dirty air.
  • Chemical linked to birth defects found at unsafe levels in canned food. A study by the Environmental Working Group found unsafe levels of Bisphenol A (BPA) in more than half of the samples of canned fruits, vegetables, soda, and baby formula taken from supermarket shelves.
  • World population on the rise. The world's population is expected to rise from the current 6.5 billion to 9.1 billion by 2050.

 

Sugar, a not so sweet subject

The world's sugar consumption is growing at an amazing rate. In fact, 145 million tons of sugars are produced in 121 countries every year!

Manufacturing and processing of sugar takes a major toll on the planet. Effecting everything from biodiversity, to soil fertility and water quality, sugar is tough on the environment. Read the report on sugar and the environment by the World Wildlife Fund.

  • Get supercharged with this 'rawcumentary'. Jenna just finished her documentary film called Super Charge Me about her personal transformation on raw food. It will be screened at the Raw Film Festival in Hollywood, CA. Get a sneak preview by checking out the two minute trailer of Super Charge Me.
  • Forget bagging, wrap it! Erin wanted to recommend a great alternative to plastic sandwich bags called the Wrap-N-Mat. The Wrap-N-Mat is a reusable storage system for sandwiches that can also be used as a placemat.
  • Tour in eco-friendly style with Mr. Toad. Our own Jillicious wanted to spread the word about Mr. Toad's Tours, which takes you on adventure through San Francisco in pre-1930's vehicles that are eco-friendly and run off propane.

  • LEED professional accreditation. Congratulations to Eileen, who just passed her exam to become a LEED accredited professional! Learn more about what it means here.
  • Almost organic comfort. Wendy wanted to recommend Northern Naturals, a company that makes comfy futons that are as close to organic as you can get.
  • Smart people eat chocolate, but we already knew that! Brock thought we'd like this article, and he was right! A study from Nottingham University concluded that dark chocolate can help improve alertness and increase performance over several hours.
  • McDonald's to roll out premium patties. Mr. Designer found out that McDonald's, following in the footsteps of Carl's Jr. and Burger King, will start selling premium Angus beef burgers at over 600 of their California franchises.

    • Emily recommend's recording artist Vienna Teng, who's Green Caravan Tour includes green merchandise and working with Habitat for Humanity.
  • Super socks. Ever wondered how socks made from bamboo hold up compared to regular cotton ones? Well Bob found a great pair that go the distance, Bamboo Runners from Geomio. They're designed specifically for running, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
  • Nice try Coca-Cola, but not quite. Diana sent us an article about Coca-Cola's new 'healthy' drink, Diet Coke Plus. It's Diet Coke with a few vitamins tossed in there, but if you ask us, it's not enough to qualify Diet Coke as healthy. . .
  • San Fran could ban plastic bags. Patrick sent us an article about how San Francisco's city board of directors is considering a ban on plastic bags.
  • Grow your own home. Jay thought that the 'Fab Tree Hab' was an idea worth passing along. It's an all-green concept home that will grow from a few seedlings into a 2 story eco-efficient home.
  • Hyundai takes new approach to fuel efficiency. According to Jeromy, it seems Hyundai has finally made a car worth buying! The QarmaQ's skin is mostly made from recycled plastic bottles, making the car much lighter, resulting in about 20 gallons a year savings in gas.

  • Calculate your impact. Liz from NY sent along a link to the Eating Green Calculator, which calculates the impact of your eating habits on your body and the environment.
  • Tire reef disaster. Beth sent an article about the artificial tire reef off the coast of Florida. A salvage effort to remove all of the tires is expected to run through 2010 and cost the state around $3.4 million.
  • Congrats to Alison! Alison and her husband are expecting the first Teeny Weenie Greenie Baby! Congrats!
  • Allison (another one!) found an article about Al Gore earning money from zinc mining. He's not perfect, but he does offset the pollution the mine creates.
