Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Want to be on TV? ABC's hit show "Wife Swap" is currently casting for their fourth season and is looking to feature a family where the mom is a working mom/entrepreneur. Families that appear on the show receive $20,000 as a thank you and if you refer a family that appears on the show, you receive $1000. If you're interested, email us at hip@greenfeet.com and we'll get you in contact with the casting producer.
  • Finally! Reusable envelopes! Check out EcoEnvelopes, the first USPS-approved reusable envelopes.
  • Is that seafood sustainable? FishPhone is a new sustainable seafood text messaging service from the Blue Ocean Institute. Consumers can send a text message to 30644 with the message FISH and the name of the fish in question. In just seconds you'll receive a response text with Blue Ocean's assessment of the fish and better alternatives to fish with significant environmental concerns. Rachel tested it and gives it an overwhelming 2 hips!
  • Is green power available in my state? Find out what green power options are available in your state at the Green Power Network.
  • Trash Talk you won't mind hearing. Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns has teamed up with Nike to create the new Nike Trash Talk, a shoe made completely from manufacturing waste.
Hip News:
  • Cleared for take off. Virgin Atlantic has completed the first biofuel flight from London to Amsterdam.

Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢

The ultimate in recycling: organ donation. This week's Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢ was sent in by Katie in Austin and is to sign up to be an organ donor. Katie recently signed up to be an organ donor for when, as she puts so eloquently, "my time here is done and I go to the big brew pub in the sky". Sign up to be an organ donor on your State's registry list and learn more about organ donation at OrganDonor.gov.

Motion of the Ocean

Dori and Val chat about utilizing the ocean as an alternative source of energy. Check the links below for more information on ocean power.

Listener Emails

Once again, we have a bunch of great listener emails. Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and speak your mind at our MHTH forum!

  • Not your average Co-Op. Katie sent a link to the Black Star Co-Op, a co-op brewpub in Austin, Texas.
  • Eat your veggies. Brian in Tennessee was listening to the BBC World Technology podcast when he heard about the Veg Exchange. The site allows people who find themselves with homegrown produce they can't use, to post a message to sell or swap produce with others. Brian also sent a link about Sandia National Labs and Stirling Energy Systems, which set a new world record in solar power generation that put efficiency on par with that of conventional coal fired plants.
  • Not so clean coal. Kevin sent along a link to a video about the fight over coal in Nevada and the ad campaign by the coal mining, utilities, and train industries.
  • Lance Armstrong promotes bike commuting. Renee was excited to hear about Lance Armstrong's new 18,000 sq. ft. bike shop Mellow Johnny's in Austin, Texas. The new shop is part of Armstrong's effort to encourage more people to commute by bike.
  • School carnival ideas. Jen in Canada was wondering about eco-friendly ideas for stations at a school carnival. Val recommends having kids decorate empty Altoid tins to make their own little container. A little instant photo booth with costumes is always a big hit at Dori's daughter's school.
