More Hip Than Hippie #144 - CSA to Z

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Sierra Nevada Summerfest

Chocolate: Perugina Bittersweet Chocolate Bar 60%

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Xerox has come up with a calculator that helps companies reduce energy used by printers, copiers, and other technology. The calculator considers factors like the type of print cartridge, print color, speed, and number of pages printed per month.
Hip News:
  • Here fishy, fishy. Scientists are testing Pavlov's theory out in a slightly different environment: under water. Scientists will try to train fish to catch themselves by swimming into a net when they hear a tone that signals feeding time.
  • "Green" Eggs. Do the eggs you eat from happy hens, roaming freely on a open range? Probably not. Most eggs come from confined animal feeding operations (CAFO's) in which thousands of hens are confined in small spaces. With a little research, you can ensure you're eating eggs from hens that treated humanely.
  • Urban Decay The city of Boston is looking to build an urban, indoor composting facility. In addition to reducing the carbon emissions generated by transporting the waste outside the city, the facility would also utilize the methane from the decomposing waste to generate electricity.

Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢

This week's Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢ was inspired by Earth Hour. Make a commitment to dine by candle light once a week. You'll enjoy the time spent bonding with friends and family - and use less energy while you're at it!

CSA to Z

Lee and Francine from our local CSA stop by the patio to chat with Dori and Val. They work at GRUB, which stands for Growing Resourcefully Uniting Bellies, which delivers a box of locally grown, organic produce by bike to your home each week. GRUB sets aside 25% of the veggies for low-income families at reduced or no cost. If you have any questions for Lee or Francine, you can email them at grubchico@yahoo.com.

Listener Emails

Once again, we have a bunch of great listener emails. Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and speak your mind at our MHTH forum!

  • Going batty. Nikki wrote in for advice to attract bats to her bat house. Pick up your own Bat House at Greenfeet.com.
  • Thar she blows. Alex sent along a cool article about how some French wine will be transported as far as Canada by three-masted 19th century sail boats.
  • Equal opportunity growing. Brian sent a news story about a study that shows identical crop yields from organically grown foods and those grown non-organically.
  • The Fringe. Jay sent a link to his new forum, The Fringe. It's for people who want to eat food that is environmentally conscious, animal friendly, but not necessarily always vegetarian.
  • The wonders of biodiesel. Kellie sent a link with the Top 15 Unexpected Uses for Biodiesel.
  • She's not the brightest bulb. . . Sven sent an article about how Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has introduced the "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act". The bill seeks to repeal the nationwide phase-out of conventional light bulbs.
  • A mystery. James sent a link to an article about the mystery of global warming's missing heat.
