Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Hoodie-Hoo! February 20th is considered Hoodie-Hoo Day in the Northern Hemisphere. At noon on this day, people go outside, wave their hands, and chant "Hoodie-Hoo" to chase away Winter and bring in Spring. Count us in!
  • Recycling shoes. Check out RecycledRunners.com to find a facility that recycles shoes near you.
  • Disposing of CFL's. Green Living Tips has a great outline for disposing and recycling CFL's.
Hip News:

Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢

This week's Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢ is to start researching what you want to plant in your garden. You'll want to look for organic and/or heirloom seeds to preserve diversity.

A Chat with Hipster Nev

Listener Kati Neville (aka Nev on the forum) calls into the patio to chat with Dori and Val about her new book Fix, Freeze, Feast.

Kati describes the book best when she says, "Fix, Freeze, Feast helps busy families fill their freezers at an affordable price using fresh ingredients wherever possible". The book details recipes that use bulk ingredients, which you can then freeze and serve later. Check out YouTube for a video demonstrating the Fix, Freeze, Feast method.

Environmental Policy

Dori and Val recap the environmental policy of the four remaining candidates in the Presidential Primaries. Check the links below for more information.

Listener Emails

Once again, we have a bunch of great listener emails. Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and speak your mind at our MHTH forum!

  • Uranium as a source of energy. Rick responded to last week's episode on nuclear energy with a little more information. He sent along an article about the world's largest uranium mine being shut down due to pollution.
  • This Black Dog is also green. Lisa wanted to let everyone know about the Black Dog Pub in Toronto. The pub is quite green and the menu even offers tips for saving the Earth.
  • Check out this art. Steve is an English artist living in New York. He uses recycled materials he finds in Brooklyn and Manhattan to make his art. Check it out at www.myspace.com/steverileyart.
  • Recycling run around. Hannah passed along a link to the Fall 2007 issue of Co-op America. It features an article that claims while many cities are expanding their recycling facilities to accept all plastics, some may not be recycling most of it.
  • One smart cookie. Listener Brian in Tennessee was intrigued by a recent Teenie Weenie Greenie that urged listeners to start talking with their local car dealers about getting more eco-friendly cars on the market. Brian, being the smart guy that he is, is taking a different approach to bring efficient cars to market. He has developed an engine design that will get the same fuel economy as current hybrids, with fewer parts and the ability to run on a wide variety of fuels. Learn more about his design here.
  • Welcome Charlie! New listener Charlie wrote in for the first time and wanted to recommend one of his wife's favorite handbags, Angela Adams Handbags made from sustainable materials. He was also wondering about a good mattress for hot sleepers. Val's favorite is the Organic Cotton & Wool mattress because wool helps to regulate body temperature.
